Bristol Old Vic is currently in the midst of a £9 million refurbishment appeal to save the theatre from the threat of closure.
The Theatre Royal in Bristol is a Grade 1 listed building, situated on King Street, and since 1766 has provided Bristol with a cultural centre, a place to see the best in theatre outside of London. The theatre is hugely loved and respected but as the previous oldest continuously working theatre spanning some 240 years, is in need of some urgent attention. Antiquated utilities pose health and safety risks and inadequate disabled access is threatening our Premises Licence.
The last refurbishment was in 1972, when the architect Peter Moro created new foyer spaces (incorporating the 18th century Coopers Hall), a studio theatre, and greatly improved backstage and office facilities. Since then there has been no significant investment in the fabric of the building, and this is now resulting in a range of problems, which are making the theatre less viable.
If we don't refurbish the theatre complex, there is a very real risk that it will never open again.
Refurbishment will transform the theatre complex making it an accessible and comfortable environment in which to enjoy the best in theatre.
